Crane can file most of a bug report for you. Let it.
Step 1 — send it from the app
Settings → About → Support → Send Feedback
("Settings" is the bottom tab. "About" is a sub-tab along the top, at the far right. "Support" is a group heading on that page.)
In the form:
- Set Category to Bug
- Leave Include diagnostic logs switched on — this is the part that matters
- Describe what happened
- Email, if you want a reply is optional. Fill it in if you want an answer by mail rather than here
- Tap Submit
Behind that button the app collects your app version, platform, OS version, and device model, and uploads a scrubbed log privately. You do not have to type any of that, and you never have to hunt for a log file.
If nothing happens after Submit, it worked
On a normal successful send there is no confirmation pop-up. The sheet simply closes. That is success.
You only see a dialog when something needed your attention — for example "Report sent" if we got the report but your phone had no email app to open, or "Report didn't reach us" if it did not get through. If you see that second one, say so in your post.
Step 2 — tell us which report was yours
We need to match your post here to the report you just sent from the app.
Your Installation ID lives at Settings → About → Installation ID. It is its own group on that screen, sitting between the About group and the Support group.
You are probably reading this on a computer while the app is on your phone. So pick whichever of the options below is least annoying. Any single one is enough.
The easiest way, if your build has it
Look at the right-hand end of the Installation ID row for a Share button.
If it is there, tap it. It sends the ID on its own — no app name, no message, nothing to tidy up — so you can push it straight to your computer however you normally do, and paste it here.
If you do not see a Share button, you are not doing it wrong. Share is new. It is not in the sideloaded builds or the current Play internal-testing release, so most testers will not have it yet. Use one of the options below instead.
If you are on your phone anyway
Tap the Installation ID. The whole row is the copy target, so tapping anywhere on it works — including on the ID itself. You will see "Installation ID copied". Then paste it here.
(The word Copy on that row is a hint, not a button. You do not have to hit it.)
If you are on a computer
Do not squint at your phone and retype 28 characters. You do not need the whole thing.
The last 8 characters are enough. For an ID like 1a07ddbc4ea-85835de80861310f, send 0861310f.
It matters that it is the last 8 and not the first. The front of the ID is a timestamp of when you installed Crane, so two people who install within a few seconds of each other share the same opening characters. The tail is random, so it actually tells us apart — and it does not publish when you installed the app.
Or use your email instead. The feedback form has an optional field, "Email, if you want a reply". Fill it in when you send, then mention the same address here. We match on that and you never touch the ID.
Or just tell us when. "Sent about ten minutes ago, from a Pixel 8." While the beta is small, that alone usually finds it.
Or attach a photo of the About screen. You can attach images to posts here.
What that ID is, and is not
It identifies this install, so we can find your report. It is not an account and it is not tied to you personally. It means nothing to anyone else reading the thread, which is why it is safe to paste in public.
Please do not paste logs into a thread
This forum is public and search engines index it. Even a scrubbed log carries folder paths and book titles — a rough picture of your library. Send it through the app instead, where only we can read it.
If you ever want to see what is in your own log first: Settings → About → Support → View Logs.
Step 3 — tell us the three things the app cannot know
The app captures the machine facts. It cannot read your mind. So in your post:
What you did — the exact steps, in order. "Opened a book, set 2x, locked the screen."
What you expected to happen.
What actually happened. Screenshots and screen recordings are welcome.
Two details that help a lot
Does it happen every time? A bug that reproduces on demand gets fixed quickly. A one-off is harder — but still report it, and say it was a one-off.
If it is about a specific file, tell us the format (MP3, M4B, M4A, FLAC, AAC, OGG), roughly how long it is, and whether it has embedded chapters. A surprising number of playback bugs live in the file, not the app.
One bug per thread
It keeps the discussion focused and lets us mark it resolved cleanly.
What happens next
We read every report. If we can reproduce it, it goes on the list. If we cannot, we will come back with questions rather than closing it quietly.
No app in front of you?
If Crane will not start at all, just post here and say so. We will work it out from the description.
